Golden Moments in California and Napa Valley

My journey through California has been nothing short of amazing. I set out to explore beyond my comfort zone, choosing California as my destination to traverse the vast landscapes of the United States. Even though I didn’t end up living there as originally planned, each moment became a treasure, etched into the fabric of my memories.

Reconnecting, rediscovering

Reconnecting with a friend from school after a decade was pure magic. Sharing stories, rediscovering past accomplishments, and deepening our bond reminded me how time and distance can’t erase true connections. We spent hours catching up, walking through cozy neighborhoods, and revisiting some of the same dreams we had as teenagers. This wasn’t just nostalgia—it was healing.

A tapestry of cities

San Diego felt like a unique paradise. Its cultural diversity and proximity to the border often made me feel like I was in Mexico or Asia. I walked through Asian food districts, heard multiple languages at once, and explored hidden taquerías that rivaled anything back home. Meanwhile, San Francisco enchanted me with its tech-meets-tradition vibe. I admired murals in the Mission District, rode the iconic cable cars, and stood in awe at the Golden Gate Bridge, soaking in the fog that gave the city its mythical charm. Los Angeles, with its glam and glitter, was less my style, but still worth the experience.

Japantown and the little extras

Exploring Japantown in San Francisco was like diving into another culture. I tasted unique flavors, snapped photos of quirky storefronts, and yes—I tried the famous cannabis gummies (recommended at home, and in good company!). The flavors of mochi and ramen still linger in my memory. I even stopped by an old bookstore that sold vintage manga and vinyl records, which felt like stepping into a parallel universe.

The Duality of California

California, despite its progressive stance and sustainability efforts, showed me another side: streets lined with tents, rising homelessness, and high prices. But it’s a state of contrasts. Mid-century homes, La Jolla minimalism, San Francisco’s painted ladies, and western vibes in Old Town San Diego form a rich architectural collage. Even small details—like route signs shaped like almonds, a tribute to the Gold Rush—captured my imagination. Every street told a story, every building held echoes of a past still present.

Moments to keep forever

From mountain drives to golden sunsets to beers and board games with my friend and her dachshunds, everything became part of a visual diary I’ll never forget. Locals often say California isn’t what it once was, but for me, it’s where I found golden moments. I even sketched along the coast, letting the waves inspire lines and curves that would later appear in my illustrations.

Return to the Golden State: Napa Valley, May 2025

I returned in May 2025 with a different plan: this time to visit Napa Valley. I took the subway from San Francisco to El Cerrito del Norte, followed by an Uber ride straight to wine country. Renting a car is an option, but solo travel plus wine tasting? Better safe than sorry. Public transport won this time.

Staying local, drinking global

I stayed at an Airbnb 20 minutes outside of downtown Napa. My host, Everardo, a charismatic Mexican with great personality me feel right at home. If you ever plan a trip and need a recommendation, I’ve got you covered.

One thing to keep in mind: Napa isn’t cheap. Budget accordingly if you want a quality tasting experience. I visited Davies Estates, where the wine tasting was about $125 per person. Pricey, yes, but worth it. Make a reservation in advance, especially if you’re going in a group. I also heard Castelo di Amorosa is amazing, although I didn’t make it there myself. Another local tip: many tastings come with small bites, so eat light before you go!

The wine and the vibe

Napa’s nightlife is quieter than expected. If you’re craving party vibes, San Francisco is a better bet. Napa is best for relaxing days and sophisticated sips. I spent my evenings watching the stars with a glass in hand, journaling my thoughts, and dreaming about my next big adventure.

A couple of days were just enough for me. I truly think I found gold—this time in a glass of wine. That final sip didn’t just end the tasting; it unlocked a future trip I was already planning for a long time.
